Influenza A virus subtype H7N2

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Influenza A virus subtype H7N2 is a subtype of the Influenza A virus that has been identified as a potential cause of human pandemic. This subtype, like other Influenza A virus subtypes, is a part of the Orthomyxoviridae family of viruses.

Overview

Influenza A virus subtype H7N2 is a strain of the influenza virus that primarily affects birds, but can occasionally infect humans and other animals. The virus is characterized by the combination of H7 Hemagglutinin and N2 Neuraminidase, two key proteins that determine the virus's subtype.

Infection and Transmission

The primary hosts of H7N2 are birds, particularly domestic poultry. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with infected birds or their droppings, or through the air via droplets or dust particles. Human infections are rare, but have occurred, usually in people who have direct contact with infected birds.

Symptoms and Treatment

In birds, H7N2 can cause a wide range of symptoms, from mild illness to severe disease and death. In humans, the symptoms of H7N2 infection are similar to those of other forms of flu, including fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches. Treatment typically involves supportive care, including rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms. In some cases, antiviral drugs may be used.

Prevention and Control

Prevention of H7N2 infection in birds involves good biosecurity practices, including regular cleaning and disinfection of poultry houses, and vaccination of poultry. In humans, prevention involves avoiding close contact with infected birds. Control measures include culling of infected birds and vaccination of poultry.
