James Skivring Smith
James Skivring Smith (1825 – 1892) was a Liberian politician and physician who served as the sixth President of Liberia from 1871 to 1872. He was the first Liberian president to be born in Africa.
Early Life and Education
James Skivring Smith was born in 1825 in Charleston, South Carolina, United States. He emigrated to Liberia with his family as part of the American Colonization Society's efforts to resettle free African Americans in Africa. Smith pursued his education in Liberia and later traveled to the United States to study medicine. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1848, becoming one of the first African Americans to earn a medical degree.
Medical Career
Upon returning to Liberia, Smith established a medical practice and became a prominent physician. He was instrumental in improving public health and medical services in the country. Smith's contributions to medicine in Liberia were significant, and he was highly respected in his field.
Political Career
Smith's political career began when he was elected to the Liberian Senate. He later served as the Vice President of Liberia under President Edward James Roye. Following a political crisis and the impeachment of President Roye, Smith assumed the presidency on November 4, 1871.
Presidency
As president, Smith faced numerous challenges, including political instability and economic difficulties. His administration worked to stabilize the government and improve the country's financial situation. However, his tenure was short-lived, and he served as president until January 1, 1872, when he was succeeded by Joseph Jenkins Roberts.
Later Life and Legacy
After his presidency, Smith continued to be active in public service and medicine. He remained a respected figure in Liberia until his death in 1892. Smith's contributions to both the medical field and the political landscape of Liberia have left a lasting legacy.
