Jan Egeland

Jan Egeland (born 12 September 1957) is a Norwegian diplomat, politician, and humanitarian leader. He is known for his work as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.

Early Life and Education

Jan Egeland was born in Stavanger, Norway. He studied at the University of Oslo, where he earned a degree in political science. He later attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Career

Egeland began his career in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he held various positions. He was appointed as the State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1990 to 1997.

In 2003, Egeland was appointed as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. During his tenure, he was involved in coordinating international relief efforts for various crises, including the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.

Humanitarian Work

Egeland has been a prominent figure in international humanitarian work. He has served as the Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, where he has focused on issues related to refugees and internally displaced persons.

Awards and Recognition

Jan Egeland has received numerous awards for his contributions to humanitarian efforts, including the Nansen Refugee Award and the Four Freedoms Award.

Personal Life

Egeland is married and has two children. He is known for his commitment to humanitarian causes and his advocacy for human rights.
