Jancis Robinson
British wine critic, journalist and writer
Jancis Mary Robinson (born 22 April 1950) is a British wine critic, journalist, and author. She is one of the world's leading writers on wine and has been described as "the most respected wine critic and journalist in the world". Robinson writes a weekly column for the Financial Times and writes for her own website, JancisRobinson.com. She has authored several books on wine, including The Oxford Companion to Wine and Wine Grapes.
Early life and education
Robinson was born in Cumbria, England. She attended St Anne's College, Oxford, where she studied mathematics and philosophy. After graduating, she worked in travel writing before moving into the world of wine.
Career
Robinson began her career in wine writing in 1975 as the assistant editor for Wine & Spirit. In 1984, she became the first person outside the wine trade to pass the rigorous Master of Wine examination. She has since become a prominent figure in the wine industry, known for her comprehensive knowledge and authoritative voice.
Books and publications
Robinson has authored and co-authored several influential books on wine. Her most notable works include:
- The Oxford Companion to Wine – A comprehensive reference book on wine, first published in 1994.
- Wine Grapes – A detailed guide to grape varieties, co-authored with Julia Harding and José Vouillamoz.
- The World Atlas of Wine – Co-authored with Hugh Johnson, this book is a detailed atlas of the world's wine regions.
