Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) is one of the leading medical institutions in India, renowned for its undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and medical research. Established by the French Government in 1823 as École de Médicine de Pondichéry, JIPMER was converted into a medical college in 1956 under the Indian government and later declared an Institute of National Importance in 2008 by an Act of Parliament.

It was transformed into Dhanvantari Medical College at the time of the de facto transfer of Pondicherry from France to India in 1956.
