Early Life
Jean Martell was born in 1694 in the island of Jersey, which is part of the Channel Islands. The Martell family was of Huguenot descent, and like many Huguenots, they were involved in trade and commerce. Jean Martell grew up in a family that valued hard work and entrepreneurship, which would later influence his business endeavors.
Establishment of Martell Cognac
In 1715, at the age of 21, Jean Martell moved to France and settled in the town of Cognac, a region renowned for its production of brandy. Recognizing the potential of the local eaux-de-vie, Martell established his own trading house. He began by exporting high-quality cognac to Great Britain and other parts of Europe, quickly gaining a reputation for excellence.
