John Stith Pemberton

John Stith Pemberton (July 8, 1831 – August 16, 1888) was an American pharmacist and chemist. He is best known as the inventor of the popular soft drink, Coca-Cola.

Early Life and Education

Pemberton was born on July 8, 1831, in Knoxville, Georgia, United States. He attended the Reform Medical College of Georgia, where he studied pharmacy and chemistry. After completing his education, Pemberton started his career as a pharmacist.

Career

Pemberton began his career as a pharmacist in Columbus, Georgia. He opened his own drugstore and gained a reputation for his expertise in pharmaceuticals. In addition to running his drugstore, Pemberton also worked as a chemist, conducting experiments and developing new formulas.

Invention of Coca-Cola

In 1886, Pemberton invented a carbonated beverage that would later become known as Coca-Cola. He initially created the drink as a medicinal tonic, claiming that it had various health benefits. The original formula of Coca-Cola contained extracts from the coca leaf and the kola nut, giving the drink its distinctive flavor.

Pemberton's invention quickly gained popularity, and he began selling Coca-Cola in his drugstore. The drink's refreshing taste and energizing effects made it a hit among customers. Recognizing its potential, Pemberton decided to market Coca-Cola as a soft drink rather than a medicinal tonic.

Legacy

Despite his success with Coca-Cola, Pemberton faced financial difficulties due to his declining health. In 1888, he sold the rights to Coca-Cola to a businessman named Asa Griggs Candler. Candler went on to establish The Coca-Cola Company, which would become one of the world's largest beverage companies.

Today, Coca-Cola is a globally recognized brand, and Pemberton's invention continues to be enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. His contribution to the beverage industry and his entrepreneurial spirit have left a lasting legacy.
