Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs (JSAD) is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to publishing high-quality research articles, reviews, and scholarly commentaries on the epidemiology of alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, and substance use disorders. Established in 1940, it is the oldest substance-related journal published in the United States. The journal focuses on a wide range of topics including the biological, psychological, and social aspects of alcohol and drug use and addiction. It aims to contribute to the understanding and treatment of alcohol and drug dependence, thereby improving public health and safety.

History

The journal was initially launched as the Quarterly Journal of Studies on Alcohol in 1940. It was founded by Howard W. Haggard, part of the Laboratory of Applied Physiology at Yale University. The journal's name was changed to the Journal of Studies on Alcohol in 1975 to reflect a broader scope beyond quarterly publications. In 2007, it adopted its current name, Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, to encompass the increasing breadth of research on drugs in addition to alcohol.

Scope and Focus

JSAD publishes research that covers a broad spectrum of topics related to alcohol and drug use. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Epidemiology of alcohol and drug use
  • Biological mechanisms of addiction
  • Psychological factors influencing substance use
  • Social, economic, and public health impacts of alcohol and drug use
  • Policy and intervention strategies to reduce alcohol and drug-related harm

Editorial Board

The journal is overseen by an international editorial board comprising experts in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, epidemiology, public health, and addiction studies. The board is responsible for maintaining the journal's high standards of scientific rigor and integrity.

Abstracting and Indexing

JSAD is abstracted and indexed in several major databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and the Social Sciences Citation Index. This ensures that the research published in the journal is accessible to a wide academic and professional audience.

Open Access

The Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs provides open access to its articles, making research freely available to the public. This supports a greater global exchange of knowledge and contributes to the advancement of science in the field of substance use and addiction.

Impact Factor

The journal's impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. JSAD's impact factor is indicative of its influence and prestige in the field of alcohol and drug studies.

Submission Guidelines

Researchers wishing to submit their work to JSAD must adhere to the journal's submission guidelines. These include requirements for manuscript formatting, ethical considerations, and the peer review process. Detailed guidelines are available on the journal's website.

Notable Articles

Over the years, JSAD has published numerous influential articles that have contributed significantly to the field of alcohol and drug research. These articles cover a range of topics from the effectiveness of intervention strategies to the genetic underpinnings of addiction.
