Juliette de Baïracli Levy
Juliette de Baïracli Levy (11 November 1912 – 28 May 2009) was a herbalist, author, and pioneer in the field of Holistic veterinary medicine. She is best known for her work in natural rearing and treatment of domestic animals, particularly in the use of herbal remedies, and is often regarded as the grandmother of Holistic pet care. De Baïracli Levy's approach to animal care emphasized the importance of diet, environment, and the use of traditional herbs in maintaining and restoring health.
Early Life and Education
Juliette de Baïracli Levy was born in Manchester, England, to a wealthy family. She developed an interest in natural healing and herbal medicine at a young age, which was influenced by her travels to various parts of Europe and the Middle East. She attended the University of Liverpool, where she studied veterinary science, but left before completing her degree to pursue her own path in holistic animal care.
Career
De Baïracli Levy spent many years traveling across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, living with nomadic peoples and learning their herbal healing traditions. During her travels, she gathered extensive knowledge about traditional remedies and the medicinal properties of plants. She used this knowledge to develop her own holistic approach to animal care, which she documented in several books and articles.
Her first book, "The Complete Herbal Book for the Dog and Cat," published in 1955, is considered a seminal work in the field of holistic pet care. It offers a comprehensive guide to natural rearing and herbal treatment for dogs and cats, covering topics such as diet, exercise, and the use of herbs to treat common ailments.
Philosophy and Approach
De Baïracli Levy's philosophy of animal care was based on the belief that animals thrive best on a natural diet and in an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat. She advocated for the use of traditional herbs and natural remedies to prevent and treat disease, rather than relying on synthetic drugs and chemicals. Her approach also emphasized the importance of understanding the connection between the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of animals.
Legacy
Juliette de Baïracli Levy's work has had a lasting impact on the field of holistic animal care. Her books continue to be widely read and respected by those interested in natural rearing and herbal medicine for pets.
