Lateral plantar artery
Lateral Plantar Artery
The Lateral Plantar Artery (pronunciation: lat-er-al plan-tar ar-ter-y) is a significant blood vessel in the foot. It is a branch of the Posterior Tibial Artery, which is itself a branch of the Popliteal Artery.
Etymology
The term "Lateral Plantar Artery" is derived from the Latin words "latus" meaning "side", "planta" referring to the "sole of the foot", and "arteria" meaning "windpipe, artery".
Anatomy
The Lateral Plantar Artery is one of the two terminal branches of the Posterior Tibial Artery, the other being the Medial Plantar Artery. It travels obliquely toward the base of the fifth metatarsal bone and then turns medially, forming the plantar arterial arch.
Function
The Lateral Plantar Artery supplies blood to the lateral side of the sole of the foot. It also contributes to the formation of the Plantar Arterial Arch, which provides blood to the toes.
