Lauren Bacall
American actress (1924–2014)
Lauren Bacall (born Betty Joan Perske; September 16, 1924 – August 12, 2014) was an American actress and model, known for her distinctive voice and sultry looks. She was named the 20th-greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute.
Early Life
Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske on September 16, 1924, in The Bronx, New York City. Her parents were Natalie (née Weinstein-Bacal), a secretary, and William Perske, who worked in sales. Her parents divorced when she was five, and she took her mother's last name, Bacal, later modifying it to Bacall.
Career
Bacall began her career as a model before making her film debut in To Have and Have Not (1944) opposite Humphrey Bogart. Her performance in the film was well-received, and she became an overnight sensation. Bacall and Bogart married in 1945 and went on to star in several films together, including The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948).
Throughout her career, Bacall appeared in a variety of films, including How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable, and Designing Woman (1957) with Gregory Peck. She also had a successful stage career, winning Tony Awards for her performances in Applause (1970) and Woman of the Year (1981).
Personal Life
Bacall was married to Humphrey Bogart from 1945 until his death in 1957. They had two children, Stephen and Leslie. She later married actor Jason Robards in 1961, with whom she had a son, Sam Robards. They divorced in 1969.
Legacy
Lauren Bacall's legacy in the entertainment industry is significant. She is remembered for her unique voice, her strong screen presence, and her contributions to both film and theater. Bacall received an Academy Honorary Award in 2009 in recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of motion pictures.
