Lauren Underwood
Lauren Underwood (born October 4, 1986) is an American politician and registered nurse who serves as the U.S. Representative for Illinois's 14th congressional district. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education
Underwood was born in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, and raised in Naperville, Illinois. She attended Neuqua Valley High School and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan. She also holds a Master of Science in Nursing and a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.
Career
Nursing and Public Health
Before entering politics, Underwood worked as a registered nurse and served as a senior advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the Obama administration. In her role at HHS, she worked on implementing the Affordable Care Act.
Political Career
Underwood announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in August 2017. She ran in Illinois's 14th congressional district, a seat held by Republican Randy Hultgren. In the 2018 election, she won the Democratic primary and went on to defeat Hultgren in the general election, becoming the youngest Black woman to serve in Congress.
Tenure in Congress
Underwood was sworn into office on January 3, 2019. She serves on the Committee on Education and Labor, the Committee on Homeland Security, and the Committee on Veterans' Affairs. Her legislative priorities include healthcare, education, and veterans' issues.
Legislation
Underwood has introduced and supported various pieces of legislation aimed at improving healthcare access, addressing the opioid crisis, and supporting veterans. She is a co-founder of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, which focuses on addressing disparities in maternal health outcomes.
Personal Life
Underwood resides in Naperville, Illinois. She continues to be active in her community and advocates for healthcare and public health issues.
