League of Legends
Multiplayer online battle arena video game
League of Legends (LoL) is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed and published by Riot Games. It was released on October 27, 2009, for Microsoft Windows and macOS. The game is free-to-play and is monetized through purchasable character customization.
Gameplay
In League of Legends, players assume the role of a "champion" with unique abilities and battle against a team of other players or computer-controlled champions. The goal is usually to destroy the opposing team's "Nexus," a structure located within their base. Each match is discrete, with all champions starting off relatively weak but increasing in strength by accumulating items and experience over the course of the game.
Game Modes
League of Legends features several game modes:
- Summoner's Rift: The primary game mode, featuring a three-lane map.
- ARAM: All Random All Mid, a single-lane map.
- Teamfight Tactics: An auto-battler mode.
- Rotating Game Modes: Special modes that are available for a limited time.
Champions
As of 2025, there are over 150 champions available in League of Legends. Each champion has a unique set of abilities and playstyle. Champions are categorized into different roles such as Assassin, Tank, Mage, Marksman, and Support.
Esports
League of Legends has a significant presence in the esports scene. The game hosts several regional leagues, such as the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) in North America and the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) in Europe. The annual League of Legends World Championship is one of the most prestigious events in esports, drawing millions of viewers worldwide.
Development and Release
League of Legends was inspired by the custom map Defense of the Ancients for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. The game was developed by Riot Games, a company founded by Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill, with the help of Steve "Guinsoo" Feak and Steve "Pendragon" Mescon, who were involved in the development of Defense of the Ancients.
Cultural Impact
League of Legends has had a significant impact on gaming culture and has been referenced in various media. The game has a large and active community, with numerous fan sites, forums, and social media groups dedicated to discussing strategies, sharing fan art, and organizing events.
