Likud
Likud (Hebrew: לִכּוּד, lit. "Consolidation") is a major right-wing political party in Israel. Founded in 1973 by Menachem Begin and Ariel Sharon in an alliance with several right-wing parties, Likud has been one of the dominant forces in Israeli politics. The party's platform emphasizes free market policies, national security, and a strong stance on Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
History
Likud was established as a coalition of several right-wing parties, including Herut, the Liberal Party, and others. The party first came to power in the 1977 elections, marking a significant shift in Israeli politics, which had been dominated by the Labor Party since the establishment of the state in 1948. Menachem Begin became the first Likud Prime Minister, and his tenure included the signing of the Camp David Accords with Egypt in 1978.
Ideology
Likud's ideology is rooted in Revisionist Zionism, which was founded by Ze'ev Jabotinsky. The party advocates for a free market economy, reduced government intervention, and privatization of state-owned enterprises. In terms of foreign policy, Likud takes a hardline stance on security issues and supports the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Leadership
Over the years, Likud has been led by several prominent Israeli politicians, including:
- Menachem Begin (1973–1983)
- Yitzhak Shamir (1983–1992)
- Benjamin Netanyahu (1993–1999, 2005–present)
- Ariel Sharon (1999–2005)
Electoral Performance
Likud has been a major player in Israeli elections, often competing closely with the Labor Party and other centrist and left-wing parties. The party has formed several coalition governments and has been instrumental in shaping Israeli domestic and foreign policy.
