Lionel Barrymore (April 28, 1878 – November 15, 1954) was an American actor of stage, screen, and radio. He was a member of the Barrymore family of actors, which included his siblings John Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Barrymore is best known for his roles in films such as It's a Wonderful Life and A Free Soul, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Early Life

Lionel Barrymore was born Lionel Herbert Blythe in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to actors Maurice Barrymore and Georgiana Drew. He was the eldest of three siblings, all of whom became prominent actors. Barrymore attended various schools, including the Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia, but he was more interested in pursuing a career in acting.

Barrymore began his acting career on the stage, making his debut in 1893. He performed in numerous plays, often alongside his family members. His stage career spanned several decades, and he appeared in productions such as Peter Ibbetson and The Copperhead.

Film Career

Death

Lionel Barrymore died on November 15, 1954, in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 76. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles.
