Africa
Uganda
The first recorded outbreak of West Nile virus occurred in 1937 in the West Nile district of Uganda. This initial outbreak led to the identification of the virus.
South Africa
In 1974, South Africa experienced a significant outbreak of West Nile virus, which resulted in numerous cases of West Nile fever.
Europe
Romania
In 1996, Romania experienced a major outbreak of West Nile virus, with hundreds of cases reported. This outbreak was significant as it marked one of the first major occurrences of the virus in Europe.
