LogMAR Chart

The LogMAR Chart (pronounced: /lɒɡmɑːr tʃɑːrt/), also known as the Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution Chart, is a type of Visual acuity testing tool used in Ophthalmology and Optometry. The term "LogMAR" is derived from the words "logarithm" and "minimum angle of resolution", indicating its function in measuring the smallest visual angle a person can perceive.

Etymology

The term "LogMAR" is an acronym for "Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution". The "logarithm" part refers to the mathematical function used to calculate the score, while the "minimum angle of resolution" refers to the smallest visual angle that can be perceived by the human eye.

Usage

The LogMAR chart is used to assess Visual acuity, which is a measure of the spatial resolution of the visual processing system. It is commonly used in Ophthalmology and Optometry to diagnose and monitor various eye conditions, such as Myopia, Hyperopia, and Astigmatism. The chart consists of rows of letters, with each row corresponding to a specific level of visual acuity. The patient is asked to read the letters from a set distance, and the smallest row they can read accurately determines their visual acuity score.
