Ludvig Puusepp
Estonian neurologist and neurosurgeon
Ludvig Puusepp (3 December 1875 – 19 October 1942) was a pioneering Estonian neurologist and neurosurgeon, recognized as one of the founders of modern neurosurgery. He was the first professor of neurosurgery in the world and made significant contributions to the field of neurology and neurosurgery.
Early Life and Education
Ludvig Puusepp was born in Kyiv, then part of the Russian Empire, to an Estonian family. He pursued his medical education at the University of Tartu, where he developed a keen interest in the nervous system. After completing his studies, Puusepp furthered his education in St. Petersburg, where he worked under the guidance of prominent neurologists and neurosurgeons.
Career
Puusepp's career was marked by his innovative approaches to neurosurgery. In 1910, he was appointed as the first professor of neurosurgery at the Imperial Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg. His work there laid the foundation for modern neurosurgical techniques and education.
In 1920, Puusepp returned to Estonia, where he became a professor at the University of Tartu. He established the first neurosurgical clinic in Estonia, which became a center for neurosurgical research and training. Puusepp was instrumental in developing new surgical techniques and was known for his meticulous approach to surgery.
