Lunula
Lunula (pronounced: loo-nyuh-luh) is a term used in anatomy to describe the crescent-shaped whitish area of the bed of a fingernail or toenail. The lunula is the visible part of the nail matrix, the root of the nail which is the part where growth occurs.
Etymology
The term "lunula" is derived from the Latin word 'lunula' which means 'little moon'. This is due to the crescent shape of the lunula which resembles a small moon.
