MacOS Sierra
macOS Sierra is the thirteenth major release of macOS, Apple Inc.'s desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. It was announced on June 13, 2016, at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and was released to the public on September 20, 2016. macOS Sierra is the successor to OS X El Capitan and was succeeded by macOS High Sierra.
New Features
macOS Sierra introduced several new features and improvements, including:
Siri Integration
For the first time, Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, was integrated into macOS. Users can perform various tasks using voice commands, such as searching for files, sending messages, and setting reminders.
Optimized Storage
The Optimized Storage feature helps users free up space on their Mac by storing rarely used files in iCloud and keeping only recent files on the local drive. It also provides recommendations for clearing out old files and managing storage.
Universal Clipboard
The Universal Clipboard allows users to copy content such as text, images, and videos on one Apple device and paste it on another. This feature works across macOS and iOS devices.
Auto Unlock
With Auto Unlock, users can unlock their Mac using an authenticated Apple Watch. This feature requires both devices to be signed in with the same Apple ID and have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
Apple Pay
macOS Sierra introduced support for Apple Pay on the web. Users can make secure online purchases using Safari and authenticate the payment using Touch ID on their iPhone or Apple Watch.
Picture-in-Picture
The Picture-in-Picture feature allows users to float a video window from Safari or iTunes over their desktop or full-screen apps, enabling multitasking while watching videos.
System Requirements
macOS Sierra is compatible with the following Mac models:
- iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
- MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
- MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
- MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
- Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
- Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
Reception
macOS Sierra received generally positive reviews from users and critics. The integration of Siri and the new features aimed at improving productivity and storage management were particularly praised. However, some users reported issues with compatibility and performance on older Mac models.
