American cartoonist, writer, producer, and animator



Matthew Abram Groening (born February 15, 1954) is an American cartoonist, writer, producer, and animator. He is the creator of the comic strip Life in Hell and the television series The Simpsons, Futurama, and Disenchantment.

Early life

Groening was born in Portland, Oregon, the middle of five children. His father, Homer Philip Groening, was a filmmaker, advertiser, and cartoonist. His mother, Margaret Ruth, was a teacher. Groening attended Lincoln High School and later The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.

Career

Life in Hell

Groening began his career with the comic strip Life in Hell, which was based on his experiences in Los Angeles. The strip was a success and ran in alternative newspapers for over 30 years.

The Simpsons

In 1987, Groening was approached by James L. Brooks to create a series of animated shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show. This led to the creation of The Simpsons, which debuted as a half-hour prime time show on Fox in 1989. The Simpsons has since become the longest-running American sitcom and the longest-running American animated series.

Futurama

In 1999, Groening created Futurama, an animated series set in the 31st century. The show was initially canceled in 2003 but was revived in 2007 due to strong DVD sales and fan support. It ran until 2013 and has since gained a cult following.

Disenchantment

In 2018, Groening debuted Disenchantment on Netflix. The series is set in a medieval fantasy kingdom and follows the adventures of a rebellious princess, her elf companion, and her personal demon.

Personal life

Groening has been married twice and has several children. He is known for his distinctive art style and his influence on modern animation and comedy.

Awards and honors

Groening has received numerous awards, including Primetime Emmy Awards for The Simpsons and Futurama. He has also been inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.

Legacy

Groening's work has had a significant impact on popular culture, influencing a generation of cartoonists and animators. The Simpsons in particular has been praised for its satirical take on American life and its influence on television.
