Mecca

Mecca (pronunciation: /ˈmɛkə/), also spelled Makkah, is a city in the Hejazi region of Saudi Arabia. The city is located 70 km (43 mi) inland from Jeddah, in a narrow valley 277 m (909 ft) above sea level. It is the birthplace of Muhammad and the site of the composition of the Quran.

Etymology

The English term "Mecca" is derived from the city's original Arabic name, Makkah. Some believe it to be derived from the Arabic word 'Makkah' (مكة), which refers to a house or dwelling. Others suggest it may come from the Arabic root 'mkk' (مكك), meaning to suck or to draw out, possibly in reference to the city's well, Zamzam Well, which is said to provide miraculously generated water.
