Melissa (pronounced /məˈlɪsə/) is a genus of perennial herbs in the Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia but cultivated and naturalized in many other places. The most commonly known member of this genus is Melissa officinalis, also known as lemon balm.
Etymology
The name Melissa is derived from the Greek word μέλισσα (mélissa), meaning "honey bee," which was derived from μέλι (meli), "honey." In Hellenistic culture, 'Melissa' was the name of one of the Pleiades who helped raise the infant Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy.
