Melitta is a German company that produces coffee, coffee filters, and coffee makers. It was founded in 1908 by Melitta Bentz, who invented the first coffee filter. The company is still family-owned and operated, with its headquarters in Minden, Germany.
History
Melitta Bentz invented the first coffee filter in 1908. She was looking for a way to brew coffee without leaving grounds in the cup. She experimented with different materials and eventually found that blotting paper from her son's school notebook worked best. She patented her invention and started the Melitta company.
The company grew rapidly and by the 1920s, it was producing more than 100,000 filters a day. In the 1930s, Melitta introduced the first electric coffee maker. The company continued to innovate and expand, introducing new products and entering new markets.
