Merit-Ptah
Merit-Ptah was an early physician in ancient Egypt, and is often credited with being the first woman known by name in the history of the field of medicine. Merit-Ptah was mentioned in a tomb inscription as “the Chief Physician,” indicating she held a position of authority and expertise in the medical field. This inscription, found in Saqqara, is the earliest known historical record of a woman named in medicine.
