Mesohyl
Mesohyl is a gelatinous matrix found within the body of sponges, belonging to the phylum Porifera. It functions as an internal skeleton that provides structural support and gives the sponge its shape. The mesohyl is located between the two main cell layers of sponges, the outer dermal layer and the inner choanocyte layer. This article delves into the composition, function, and significance of the mesohyl in sponges.
Composition
The mesohyl is composed of a collagen-like gel containing various cells and fibers. It includes several types of cells, such as archaeocytes (also known as amoebocytes), sclerocytes, spongocytes, and collencytes, each serving different functions within the sponge. Archaeocytes are involved in digestion and nutrient distribution, sclerocytes produce spicules (calcium carbonate or silica structures) that provide support, spongocytes secrete spongin (a type of collagen), and collencytes are responsible for producing the collagenous matrix of the mesohyl.
Function
The primary function of the mesohyl is to provide structural support to the sponge, allowing it to maintain its shape and integrity. It acts as a scaffold in which cells can move and perform their functions. The mesohyl also plays a crucial role in the sponge's filtration system, facilitating the movement of water and the capture of food particles. Additionally, it is involved in the reproductive processes of sponges, serving as a medium for the development of gametes and the dispersal of larvae.
Significance
The mesohyl is essential for the survival and function of sponges. It not only provides structural support but also participates in vital processes such as feeding, respiration, and reproduction. Understanding the composition and function of the mesohyl can offer insights into the evolutionary biology of sponges and the development of multicellular organisms.
