From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Michael J. Sofia is an American chemist and pharmacologist best known for his work in the development of Sofosbuvir, a medication used to treat Hepatitis C. Sofia's contributions to the field of pharmacology have been recognized globally, earning him the Lasker Award in 2016.

Early Life and Education

Michael J. Sofia was born in America. He pursued his undergraduate studies in Chemistry at Cornell University, where he developed a keen interest in medicinal chemistry. He later obtained his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois.

Career

After completing his education, Sofia worked at several pharmaceutical companies, including DuPont Pharmaceuticals and Bristol-Myers Squibb. His work primarily focused on the development of antiviral drugs, particularly those targeting Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

In 2005, Sofia joined Pharmasset, a small biotech company, where he led the team that developed Sofosbuvir. This drug, a nucleotide analogue, inhibits the Hepatitis C virus by blocking the viral RNA replication process. Sofosbuvir has been hailed as a breakthrough in the treatment of Hepatitis C due to its high cure rate and low side effects.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of his significant contributions to the field of pharmacology, Sofia was awarded the Lasker Award in 2016. The award, often referred to as "America's Nobel," is given annually to living persons who have made major contributions to medical science or who have performed public service on behalf of medicine.
