Mirror (medicine)

Mirror (pronunciation: /ˈmɪrər/) is a tool used in various medical procedures and examinations. It is often used in dentistry and dermatology to provide a clear view of areas that are otherwise hard to see.

Etymology

The term "mirror" comes from the Latin word 'mirare', meaning 'to look at'. It was first used in the English language in the 13th century.

Usage in Medicine

In medicine, mirrors are used in a variety of ways. In dentistry, dental mirrors are used to inspect the mouth and teeth. They can also be used in dermatology to examine the skin, and in ophthalmology to examine the eyes.

In addition, mirrors are used in physical therapy and neurology in a technique known as mirror therapy. This involves using a mirror to create a reflective illusion of an affected limb in order to trick the brain into thinking movement has occurred without pain.
