Monica Lin Brown (Template:IPA-en) is an American military medic who was awarded the Silver Star for her actions during the War in Afghanistan.

Etymology

The name Monica is of Latin origin and means "advisor". The middle name Lin is of Chinese origin and means "beautiful". The surname Brown is of English origin and is derived from a nickname for a person with brown hair or complexion.

Biography

Monica Lin Brown was born in Lake Jackson, Texas and joined the United States Army in 2005. She was deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 as a health care specialist with the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

On April 25, 2007, during a combat patrol, Brown's convoy was hit by a roadside bomb. Despite the danger, she ran through insurgent gunfire to reach the wounded soldiers. She used her body to shield them while mortar rounds fell less than 100 yards away. For her actions, she was awarded the Silver Star, becoming the second woman since World War II to receive the award.
