Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean. The island is known for its lush green mountains and active volcano, the Soufrière Hills. The name Montserrat is derived from the Spanish words 'monte' and 'serrate', which translate to 'serrated mountain'.

Etymology

The island was named by Christopher Columbus in 1493, after the Montserrat mountain located in Catalonia, Spain. The name Montserrat means 'serrated mountain' in Catalan, referring to the jagged appearance of the mountain range.

Geography

Montserrat is located in the Leeward Islands, part of the chain of islands known as the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The island is approximately 16 km long and 11 km wide, with a total area of 104 square kilometers. The island's highest point is the Chances Peak in the Soufrière Hills, standing at 915 meters above sea level.

Demographics

The population of Montserrat is predominantly of African descent, with a small mixed-race and European minority. The official language is English, and the majority of the population is Christian.

Economy
