Munir Said Thalib

Munir Said Thalib (8 December 1965 – 7 September 2004) was a prominent Indonesian human rights and anti-corruption activist. He was the founder of the Kontras (Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence) and the Imparsial (The Indonesian Human Rights Monitor).

Early Life

Munir was born in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. He completed his law degree at the Brawijaya University in 1989. After graduation, he worked with the Legal Aid Institute in Jakarta.

Career

In 1998, Munir co-founded Kontras, an organization dedicated to finding missing persons and victims of violence in Indonesia. He also established Imparsial in 2002, a human rights monitoring group. His work focused on issues such as military reform, accountability, and transitional justice.

Death and Legacy

Munir was assassinated in 2004 during a flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam. His death sparked international outrage and calls for justice. Despite the controversy surrounding his death, his legacy continues to inspire human rights activists in Indonesia and around the world.
