Nanorobotics

Nanorobotics (pronunciation: /ˌnænoʊroʊˈbɒtɪks/) is the technology of creating machines or robots at or close to the microscopic scale of a nanometer (10^-9 meters).

Etymology

The term "Nanorobotics" is derived from the combination of two words: "Nano" and "Robotics". "Nano" is a unit prefix in the metric system denoting a factor of 10^-9. It comes from the Greek νᾶνος, meaning "dwarf". "Robotics" is the branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots. The word "robot" was first used in a 1920 play and is derived from the Czech word "robota", meaning "forced labor".

Related Terms

  • Nanotechnology: The manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale.
  • Nanomachine: A complex machine that is significantly smaller than the width of a human hair.
  • Nanomedicine: The medical application of nanotechnology.
  • Nanomanipulation: The design and manufacture of functional devices and systems at the molecular scale.
  • Nanoelectronics: The use of nanotechnology in electronic components.
  • Nanobiotechnology: The application of nanotechnology in the field of health and medical sciences.

Applications

Nanorobotics has the potential to revolutionize various fields such as Medicine, Engineering, Biotechnology, and Material science. In medicine, for example, nanorobots could be used to target cells in the body for treatment of diseases, a process known as Targeted drug delivery.

Challenges

Despite the potential benefits, there are also significant challenges in the field of nanorobotics. These include issues related to Manufacturing, Power supply, Control, and Navigation of nanorobots.
