Nantucket

Nantucket is an island located about 30 miles (48 km) south of Cape Cod, in the state of Massachusetts, United States. Together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, it constitutes the Town and County of Nantucket.
History
The island of Nantucket was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag people. The first European settlement on the island was established in 1659 by Thomas Mayhew and nine other families. The town was originally called Sherburne, but the name was later changed to Nantucket.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Nantucket became a major center for the whaling industry. The island's economy thrived on the production of whale oil, which was used for lighting lamps. However, the industry declined in the mid-19th century due to the discovery of petroleum and the depletion of whale populations.
Geography
Nantucket is a small island with a total area of 105 square miles (272 km²), of which 47.8 square miles (124 km²) is land and 57.2 square miles (148 km²) is water. The island is characterized by its sandy beaches, rolling dunes, and coastal heathlands.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, the population of Nantucket was approximately 14,255. The island experiences a significant increase in population during the summer months due to tourism.

Today, Nantucket's economy is primarily driven by tourism. The island is a popular vacation destination, known for its historic architecture, beautiful beaches, and vibrant cultural scene.
