Narcissistic Supply

Narcissistic supply (/nɑːrˈsɪsɪstɪk səˈplaɪ/) is a term in psychoanalysis that refers to the attention, admiration, fear, or any form of feedback that a narcissist requires from others to maintain their self-esteem and self-worth. The term was coined by Otto Fenichel in 1938, and it has been widely used in the study of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).

Etymology

The term "narcissistic supply" is derived from the Greek myth of Narcissus, a hunter known for his beauty who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. The term "supply" refers to the sustenance that narcissists seek from their environment to maintain their inflated self-image.

Types of Narcissistic Supply

There are two types of narcissistic supply: primary and secondary.

Primary Narcissistic Supply refers to the direct, personal feedback that the narcissist receives from others. This can include compliments, admiration, recognition, or even fear and respect.

Secondary Narcissistic Supply refers to the indirect, impersonal feedback that the narcissist receives. This can include reputation, fame, notoriety, or infamy.
