National Geographic (American TV channel)
National Geographic (American TV channel) is a American pay television channel that is owned by National Geographic Partners, a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company (73%) and the National Geographic Society (27%). The channel primarily features documentary programs and series about nature, science, culture, and history.
History
National Geographic Channel launched in the United States on January 7, 2001, though its history traces back to the National Geographic Society's film and television production efforts in the late 20th century. The channel was a result of the Society's desire to bring its brand of educational and exploratory content to a broader audience via the burgeoning cable television market. The partnership with Fox Cable Networks (a division of then News Corporation, now part of Fox Corporation) facilitated the channel's launch and expansion.
In 2019, as part of its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company took over Fox's stake in National Geographic Partners, thereby gaining a majority interest in the channel.
Programming
National Geographic Channel's programming spans a wide array of documentary series and specials focused on the natural world, history, science, and culture. Notable series have included Drain the Oceans, Life Below Zero, and Genius. The channel has also been known for its visually stunning and informative specials, such as the Planet Earth series, which it co-produced with the BBC.
In addition to original programming, National Geographic Channel has aired content from the vast archives of the National Geographic Society, including classic documentaries and explorations that have been updated for a modern audience.
Branding and Outreach
The channel has leveraged the National Geographic Society's reputation for high-quality, educational content to establish a strong brand identity. It has also engaged in various outreach and educational initiatives, including grants and sponsorships for scientific research and exploration.
Digital Presence
National Geographic Channel has embraced digital platforms, offering content through various streaming services and its own website. This digital presence allows for a broader, global audience and caters to the growing demand for on-demand content.
Criticism and Controversy
Despite its educational goals, National Geographic Channel has faced criticism for some programming choices, including reality television-style shows that some viewers feel deviate from the channel's mission to educate and inspire. However, it continues to be a popular source for documentary content and maintains a commitment to high-quality production values.
