The National University of San Marcos (Spanish: Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, UNMSM) is a public university located in Lima, Peru. It is the oldest continuously functioning university in the Americas, and one of the most prestigious in the region.

History

The National University of San Marcos was founded on May 12, 1551, by a royal decree issued by Charles V. It was originally known as the Royal and Pontifical University of the City of the Kings of Lima.
