Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is a division of the international scientific publishing company Springer Nature that publishes academic journals, magazines, online databases, and services in science and medicine.

Etymology

The name "Nature Publishing Group" is derived from its first publication, Nature, a scientific journal first published in 1869. The term "publishing group" signifies the company's expansion into a wide range of scientific publications.

History

Nature Publishing Group was created in 1999 as a subsidiary of Macmillan Publishers, which in turn is owned by the German publishing company Holtzbrinck Publishing Group. In 2015, Holtzbrinck Publishing Group merged several of its publishing brands, including Nature Publishing Group, under the new company Springer Nature.

Publications

Nature Publishing Group's flagship publication is the scientific journal Nature. In addition to Nature, NPG publishes a range of other scientific journals including Nature Genetics, Nature Physics, Nature Chemical Biology, and Nature Medicine.

Services

Nature Publishing Group also provides a number of services to the scientific community. These include Nature Masterclasses, a training service for scientists; Nature Research Editing Service, a language editing service for scientific manuscripts; and Scientific Reports, an open access journal that publishes research from all areas of the natural and clinical sciences.
