Naval Special Operations Command (NAVSOC) is a specialized unit within the United States Navy responsible for conducting special operations missions. NAVSOC operates under the larger umbrella of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and is tasked with a variety of missions including counter-terrorism, direct action, special reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare.

History

NAVSOC was established to consolidate the Navy's special operations capabilities and to provide a unified command structure for these elite units. The command has its roots in the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) of World War II, which were the precursors to the modern Navy SEALs.

Structure

NAVSOC is composed of several specialized units, each with its own unique capabilities and mission sets. These units include:

• Navy SEALs: The primary special operations force of the Navy, known for their versatility and ability to operate in all environments.
• Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (SWCC): Experts in maritime operations, responsible for the insertion and extraction of special operations forces.

Training

Personnel assigned to NAVSOC undergo rigorous training programs designed to prepare them for the demanding nature of special operations missions. This training includes:

• Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training for Navy SEALs.
• Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman (SWCC) training.
• Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) training.
