Nepal (nē-pôl)

Nepal (pronounced /nɪˈpɔːl/), officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is located mainly in the Himalayas, but also includes parts of the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

Etymology

The name Nepal is first recorded in texts from the Vedic Age, the era that founded Hinduism, the country's predominant religion. Nepal is named after the Kathmandu Valley, once known as Nepa which is a derivative from the Sanskrit Nipalaya, which means "at the foot of the mountains" or "abode at the foot", a reference to its location in relation to the Himalayas.

Geography

Nepal is a landlocked country located in South Asia. It is bordered by China to the north and India to the south, east, and west. Nepal is located in the Himalayas and is home to eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth.

Demographics

The population of Nepal is divided into about a hundred ethnic groups speaking almost a hundred languages. The largest ethnic groups are the Nepali, Maithili, and Bhojpuri.
