New York (state)
New York (pronunciation: /nuː ˈjɔːrk/) is a state in the Northeastern region of the United States. It is the nation's third most populous state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and by Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east.
Etymology
The state's name originated from the Duke of York, who later became King James II of England. The Duke of York was granted the lands between New England and Maryland as a proprietary colony (as opposed to a royal colony). The name "New York" was chosen to honor of the Duke of York.
Health and Medicine in New York
New York is home to a number of prestigious medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions. These include the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Weill Cornell Medicine, and the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. The state also has a robust public health system, managed by the New York State Department of Health.
