New York City Marathon
The New York City Marathon is an annual marathon that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. It is one of the largest marathons in the world, with over 50,000 finishers each year. The race is organized by the New York Road Runners (NYRR) and has been held every year since 1970, except for 2012 when it was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.
History
The first New York City Marathon was held in 1970, organized by Fred Lebow and Vince Chiappetta. The initial race consisted of several laps around Central Park and had 127 participants, with only 55 finishing. Over the years, the marathon expanded to cover all five boroughs of New York City, starting in Staten Island and finishing in Central Park.
Course
The marathon begins on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in Staten Island and passes through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and The Bronx, before finishing in Central Park. The course is known for its challenging hills and bridges, as well as the enthusiastic support from spectators along the route.

The New York City Marathon is open to both professional and amateur runners. Entry can be gained through a lottery system, qualifying times, or by running for charity. The race attracts participants from all over the world, including elite runners who compete for substantial prize money.
Notable Winners
Over the years, the marathon has seen many notable winners, including Grete Waitz, who won the race nine times, and Bill Rodgers, a four-time winner. The event has also been a platform for world record attempts and personal bests.
