Non-binary

Non-binary (pronounced: /nɒnˈbaɪnəri/), also known as genderqueer, is a term used to describe a category of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine. The term is often used as an umbrella term to encompass a variety of gender identities that do not conform to the traditional expectations of male or female.

Etymology

The term "non-binary" originates from the concept of binary oppositions, a key concept in structuralist theories of language, culture, and social organization. In the context of gender, the binary refers to the societal dichotomy of male and female. The prefix "non-" is used to indicate a rejection or transcendence of this binary system.
