Nonspecific Immune Cell

Nonspecific immune cells (pronunciation: non-spe-ci-fic im-yoon cells) are a type of immune cell that provides a generalized defense against pathogens, rather than targeting specific pathogens. These cells are a crucial part of the innate immune system, the body's first line of defense against infection.

Etymology

The term "nonspecific immune cell" is derived from the fact that these cells do not target specific pathogens. Instead, they respond to a wide range of foreign substances. The term "immune cell" refers to any cell that plays a role in the body's immune response.

Function

Nonspecific immune cells function by recognizing and responding to a broad range of pathogens. They do not require prior exposure to a pathogen to mount an effective response. This is in contrast to specific immune cells, which are part of the adaptive immune system and require prior exposure to a specific pathogen to mount an effective response.

Nonspecific immune cells include macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer cells. These cells are capable of phagocytosis, a process in which they engulf and destroy pathogens. They also play a role in inflammation, a key part of the body's immune response.
