Northfield Laboratories (pronounced: North-field Lab-or-a-tories) was a biotechnology company that specialized in the development of oxygen therapeutics. The company was best known for its product, PolyHeme, an oxygen-carrying blood substitute.

Etymology

The name "Northfield Laboratories" is derived from the location of the company's headquarters in Northfield, Illinois, United States. The term "laboratories" is commonly used in the names of companies involved in scientific research and development.

History

Northfield Laboratories was founded in 1985 with the aim of developing a safe and effective alternative to blood transfusion. The company's main product, PolyHeme, underwent several clinical trials but was never approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

PolyHeme

PolyHeme (pronounced: Poly-Heme) was a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) developed by Northfield Laboratories. It was designed to replicate the oxygen-carrying function of red blood cells. PolyHeme was intended for use in emergency situations where blood transfusions were not immediately available.
