Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) (pronunciation: /ˈkoʊrənaɪ, ˈkoʊrənəˌvaɪrəs/), is a virus that was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. It is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans.

Etymology

The term "novel" in the name refers to the fact that this virus is a new or previously unrecognized type. The term "coronavirus" comes from the Latin word corona, meaning crown or halo, which refers to the characteristic appearance of the virus particles under a microscope.
