Obstetric hospitalist
Obstetrician-gynecologist specializing in inpatient care
An obstetric hospitalist (also referred to as an OB hospitalist or OB/GYN hospitalist) is a board-certified or board-eligible obstetrician-gynecologist physician whose primary responsibilities involve the care and management of inpatient obstetric patients. These physicians typically work exclusively within the hospital setting and are either employed directly by the hospital or affiliated through a physician practice.
Roles and Responsibilities
Obstetric hospitalists provide comprehensive care to laboring patients and are specially trained to manage a variety of obstetric emergencies, such as:
- Postpartum hemorrhage
- Preeclampsia and eclampsia
- Uterine rupture
- Shoulder dystocia
- Emergent cesarean delivery
In addition to emergency management, their roles often include:
- Providing continuous coverage for labor and delivery units
- Offering in-house backup support to family medicine physicians and nurse midwives
- Assisting private practice physicians with surgical procedures
- Assuming care for unassigned obstetric patients who present to the hospital
- Providing vacation or off-hour coverage for community OB/GYN providers
Teaching and Training
In academic settings, OB hospitalists frequently contribute to:
- Clinical teaching of medical students and residents
- Supervision of obstetric training procedures
- Quality improvement initiatives in maternity care
Benefits of Hospitalist Model
The OB hospitalist model has been associated with several potential benefits:
- Improved patient safety through rapid availability of a physician in obstetric emergencies
- Enhanced continuity and standardization of care
- Reduction in response time for emergent interventions
- Decreased workload and burnout risk for outpatient-based obstetricians
