Ornithorhynchidae is a family of monotremes that includes the only species of platypus (genus Ornithorhynchus) and its extinct relatives. Description
Members of the Ornithorhynchidae family are characterized by their distinctive appearance, which includes a flat, duck-like bill, webbed feet adapted for an aquatic lifestyle, and a sleek, streamlined body. The platypus uses electrolocation to find its prey underwater. Male platypuses have a spur on their hind foot that can deliver a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans.
Habitat and Distribution
The platypus inhabits rivers and freshwater lakes in eastern Australia and Tasmania. It prefers environments with cold water temperatures and ample food supply, such as crustaceans, insects, and small aquatic animals.
Reproduction
Ornithorhynchidae are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. The female platypus lays 1-3 eggs and incubates them by curling around them. After about 10 days, the eggs hatch, and the mother feeds the young with milk secreted from mammary glands through openings in the skin, as monotremes lack nipples.
Evolution and Classification
The family Ornithorhynchidae is part of the order Monotremata, which also includes the family Tachyglossidae, encompassing the echidnas. The platypus and its extinct relatives represent an ancient lineage that diverged from the rest of the mammalian tree more than 160 million years ago, during the Jurassic period. This makes monotremes a vital group for understanding mammalian evolution.

The platypus is currently classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN, but its populations are declining due to habitat destruction, water pollution, and climate change.
