Pain Disorder

Pain disorder (/peɪn dɪsˈɔːdər/) is a medical condition characterized by persistent or recurrent pain experienced in one or more areas of the body, and is thought to be caused by psychological factors. The pain is often so severe that it disables the individual from performing daily activities.

Etymology

The term "pain disorder" is derived from the Latin word "poena" meaning "punishment", and the Greek word "διαταραχή" (diatarachí) meaning "disorder".

Symptoms

The primary symptom of pain disorder is the experience of pain that is not fully explained by a medical condition, the effects of a substance, or another mental disorder. The pain causes significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

  • Somatoform Disorder: A group of psychological disorders in which a patient experiences physical symptoms that are inconsistent with or cannot be fully explained by any underlying general medical or neurological condition.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of pain disorder is typically made by a psychiatrist or psychologist following the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).

Treatment

Treatment for pain disorder often involves a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
