Philip Hampton

Philip Hampton‏‎ is a prominent British businessman, known for his extensive experience in the financial sector and his leadership roles in several major companies. He has served as the chairman of RBS, GSK, and Sainsbury's, among others.

Early life and education

Philip Hampton‏‎ was born in the United Kingdom. He attended the University of Oxford, where he studied English Literature. He later qualified as a chartered accountant.

Career

Hampton‏‎ began his career in the financial sector, working for Lloyds Bank and British Steel Corporation. He then moved into the pharmaceutical industry, joining GlaxoSmithKline as finance director in 2001. He was appointed chairman of the company in 2005.

In 2009, Hampton‏‎ was appointed chairman of RBS. During his tenure, he oversaw the bank's recovery following the 2008 financial crisis. He stepped down from this role in 2015.

Hampton‏‎ has also served as chairman of Sainsbury's, one of the UK's largest supermarket chains, and of UK Financial Investments, the body responsible for managing the UK government's investments in financial institutions.

Personal life

Hampton‏‎ is married with two children. He is a keen supporter of the arts and is a trustee of the National Gallery in London.

Recognition

In recognition of his contributions to the business world, Hampton‏‎ has received several awards and honours. These include being named Business Person of the Year by the Financial Times in 2009.
