Physical Therapist

A Physical Therapist (pronounced fiz-i-kuhl ther-uh-pist), also known as a Physiotherapist in many parts of the world, is a healthcare professional who specializes in the treatment and management of a variety of physical conditions and injuries.

Etymology

The term "Physical Therapist" is derived from the Greek word "physio" meaning nature and "therapeia" meaning healing, thus referring to the natural healing of physical ailments.

Role and Responsibilities

A Physical Therapist's primary role is to diagnose and treat individuals of all ages who have medical problems or health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. They use a variety of treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability.

Physical Therapists also work in preventive healthcare, advising patients on how to lead healthy lifestyles and avoid injury. They often work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals, such as Physicians, Nurses, and Occupational Therapists.

Education and Training

To become a Physical Therapist, one must complete a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program from an accredited institution. This is typically followed by a period of clinical practice under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist. In addition, Physical Therapists must pass a national licensure examination to practice.
